I created my own therapy for my Lab's persistent ear infections. My vet did a culture, and the ear infection was yeast. It became absolutely constant, and I was forever giving antibiotics and using topical treatments. She always smelled as if she had or was getting another ear infection. In addition, her skin became blood red and she was miserable, so we gave steroids, which were also just a temporary fix. I started giving her organic plain yogurt, 1/2 cup twice a day, and in three days her condition was incredibly improved. I gave her two servings a day for a week, then cut back to one per day. Her skin is healed, her ears are as white and clean as her littermates, and she no longer smells. She is a new animal. Is this common? Is yogurt okay to feed regularly?

I don't think think this is a good idea; even though it would probably reduce the number of pets in shelters. I think people should have a choice in this matter.

On an off shoot of this, are there any studies that show that not castrating male dogs shortens their lifespan. If so, is there a website that points to this? I have a client who was wondering about this. She has 2 intact 5 year old labs. I know about the testicular cancer risk, hernias and the prostrate problems, but are there studies that have proven that a dog that is neutered generally lives longer life? I read one study that said neutering increases the risk of prostrate cancer, so it's all very confusing.

I was searching for alternative treatments and found your site...I have a 10yr old Black Lab named Brady, he is the love of my life and on Wed Jan 27 he was diagnosed with bone cancer. I am seeking alternative ways to treat him. I seem to have fallen into the trap of thinking the limp was from an injury and treated it with Rimadyl, that seemed to work with the intermittent limping. Until it started progressing, I tried acupuncture and when that seemed to give no relief, I pushed my vet for bloodwork or xrays. I got the devastating news. I have started him on a raw diet of ground hamburger and turkey (w/calcium powder added), adding pumpkin, spinach, blueberries, broccoli, eggs with omega-3, and other veggies as I make new meals. I am also giving him an antioxidant vitamin and managing his pain with 2-3 pain medications. I have opted not to do the amputation or chemo and am wondering if I am doing enough?

This is such a shame because I know from personal experience how holistic vet medicine can make such a huge difference in a pet's quality of life. You, Dr. Messonier, healed my puppy when the "regular" vet couldn't or wouldn't. I'm a huge believer in what you do! Now, can you refer me to a human dr. that does the same????

What's rarely mentioned is that the proposals seem to envision a MediCAID systm, not MediCARE. MediCARE doesn't pay great, but still much better than MediCAID. California's Medi-Cal system is a good example, many doctors/providers will take MediCARE patients, but few will take Medi-Cal due to the low payment rates. And of those who do take Medi-Cal, most you would never want to be seen by if you had a choice.

The rhetoric on "cost cutting" and "reform" translates into even lower compensation rates. Cheap cancer-causing x-rays galore, but good luck trying to get a safe and usually-more-insightful MRI. Drugs galore, but medical provider compensation rates so low they can't afford to take the time to research what the actual underlying cause of your health challenge is.

My dog has been sick since April of this year. Her symptoms started off with sneezing, cough, and this backward hiccup thing. I took her to the vet and he performed all kinds of tests; lung x-rays, cardiac ultrasound, and all kinds of blood tests. She has been on multiple rounds of antibiotics. The final diagnosis is allergies. 5 months later and she is still sick. What would you suggest I could do to treat her holistically? Do you think she could have the canine flu?
Thanks for your help!
